A high FPM on touchdown can indicate a hard landing, which is undesirable both in real aviation and in flight simulators. Monitoring FPM helps pilots and students understand how well they are controlling their descent and aiming for a soft, safe landing. However, FPM is just one factor in a successful landing—other elements like alignment, flare, and touchdown position also matter.
